Worms has, to this point, mostly been a turn based game of collateral damage and wind management, but it seems like Team17 have something anew up their sleeve with the latest installment. Worms Rumble is a 32-player arena-based real-time combat action cross-play multiplayer game, unapologetically so. And you can try it out on PC and PS4 this weekend for free.

Focusing on modes like Deathmatch and Last Worm Standing, fans of previous entries seemingly only have the weapons and worms themselves to look back fondly on in this entry into the franchise. That and worms’ staple customization, which if you look at through a jaded lens makes you think it’s ripe for monetization through skins, outfits and voice-packs in this title too…

However, let’s not judge a book by it’s cover here, the worms formula has needed something new for a while and this could be a refreshing change. You can currently dip into the Worms Rumble BETA on PS4 or on PC via Steam, for the entirety of this coming weekend to see how you feel about this genre-shift. I’ve no doubt I’ll be hopping on at some point to check out, in terms of a compelling idea I can at least give Team17 credit there.
Enjoy 32 player cross-play action from 6th November 8am UTC to 9th November 8am UTC.
