Ndemic Creations’ Plague Inc. is a game that has been downloaded more than 160 million times since its release, the game focuses on the player’s ability to create, manipulate, and curate the most deadly virus you can with the goal being the complete eradication of Earth’s populace. At the time it was a fantastically addictive idea that led to its surge of popularity and some fantastic Madagascar focused memes, but given the current global ongoing situation with COVID-19 playing a game where you unleash a deadly virus on the world to whittle down its population seems a little… Oh boy.
However, the game’s creators don’t want you to focus your efforts on building up a virus, they want you to focus on bringing one down, in the games new and free major expansion Plague Inc. The Cure, and it’s out right now on mobile devices.
Working in partnership with world health and infectious disease experts from all over the world including; the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), World Health Organisation (WHO) and Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), Plague Inc. The Cure will see players flip roles and try to save the world this time by controlling a global pandemic response.
Ndemic Creations founder James Vaughan wants the game to not just be enjoyable to players but also to be enlightening, James was quoted as saying about the game;
“It was extremely challenging to fit such a complex topic into a game but the input that experts from CEPI and elsewhere provided has been invaluable in ensuring that Plague Inc: The Cure is both educational and engaging”.
“Eight years ago, I never imagined the real world would come to resemble a game of Plague Inc. or that my game would be in a position to help educate and inform people. Plague Inc: The Cure will be free for all Plague Inc. players until COVID-19 is under control.”James Vaughan, the founder of Ndemic Creations
Richard Hatchett, the CEO of CEPI, one of the group of experts involved in the advising of the game agrees with the Ndemic Creations founder on the potential of the game’s ability to educate in saying:
“Games like Plague Inc: The Cure represent an incredibly important medium for education and public awareness that can be used to show the world the steps needed to address similar global health threats and their associated complexities.”
While it’s important to note that the developers are quick to point out this is a game, not a simulation and that while scientific input was garnered from CEPI and other infectious disease experts, Plague Inc: The Cure does not provide 100% accurate or realistic scenarios to the steps needed to be taken to end a pandemic threat and the speed and scale at which they can be achieved.
The game-changing expansion will put you in control of the global response to a pandemic, seeing you track the spread of the outbreak, support local responses, and send your research teams around the globe to track down patient zero. Plague Inc. The Cure also sees you having to manage the social and economic effects of the outbreak also, requiring you to support the economy lest the populace will begin to break all of those social distancing measures you’ll need to enact to slow the rate of infection, all this while you’ll be developing and manufacturing a vaccine to defeat the global epidemic.
